Timber Framing Boot Camp (July 29-August 3, 2024)
During this 6-day course, we will thoroughly cover the principles and methods of Square Rule Layout, with an emphasis on building an "Air Castle" in one's mind. We will begin by cutting simple girts, then braces, and posts and will follow a logical sequence of skill building. We will use a mix of traditional hand tools and power tools such as chain mortisers and circular saws. Lesson development will follow the E.D.G.E. principle where techniques will be Explained and Demonstrated. Students will then be Guided to perform the task under supervision, with a goal of Empowering each student to become proficient at each skill. Along with a focus on skill development, students will learn proper sharpening techniques as well as traditional peg-making. During this week we will discuss design considerations and forces in a frame, however, the emphasis will be on skill building and not frame design. Our goal is to give students an intensive experience focused on skill development and tricks of the trade that allow for efficient and precise layout and cutting of joinery. We will begin cutting a Square Rule 12'x16' Tie-Below-The-Plate Frame. Note: Because the rest of the project frame will be cut during the Expanded Class, there will not be a frame raising during the Boot Camp class. On-site primitive camping is free. For more information see the Skeeter Hollow Camp-Us link.
